“El favor de la Corte abre todas las puertas”. Aspectos políticos del viaje americano de Alexander von Humboldt

Los estudios del viaje se centran en las experiencias, publicaciones y aportes científicos de Humboldt. El artículo estudia la situación política española en 1799, la posición y el influjo del poderoso ministro Urquijo, cuya caída y sus eventuales consecuencias en territorios americanos, son mencionados en forma pasajera y preocupada por Humboldt. Se transcribe el inusual registro de Humboldt como pasajero de la corbeta Castor, con detalles, algunos tergiversados, sobre el influjo de Georg Forster en su formación, su continuado empleo prusiano, su avance hacia territorio portugués y las dudas por la velocidad del viaje. Estos datos, junto con algunas críticas en Quito, contemporáneas y posteriores, así como problemas de al menos dos de sus interlocutores con la Inquisición limeña, ofrecen una “mirada americana”, ciertamente parcial, a Humboldt y explican, posiblemente, los pocos datos y la percepción negativa de su estadía en Lima.

Rede zur Eröffnung der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Saison, am 13. Februar 2019 in Quito/Ecuador

Vom 11. bis zum 16. Februar 2019 führten Bundespräsident Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Frau Elke Büdenbender und eine sie begleitende Delegation eine Reise nach Lateinamerika durch. Ziel waren die beiden südamerikanischen Länder Kolumbien und Ecuador. Diese Reise führte den Bundespräsidenten unter anderem nach Cartagena de Indias, ins vorgelagerte karibische Archipel der Islas del Rosario und schließlich in die Hauptstadt Bogotá. Von der Hauptstadt Kolumbiens ging es in die Hauptstadt Ecuadors, auf das pazifische Archipel der Galapagos-Inseln, zum berühmten Vulkanriesen Antisana und schließlich nach Guayaquil, von wo aus die Rückreise nach Deutschland angetreten wurde.

Eine Dauerausstellung über Alexander von Humboldt in der Casa Humboldt in Havanna – der Weg zum ersten Alexander von Humboldt-Museum der Welt

In der kubanischen Hauptstadt Havanna eröffnet am 19. Dezember 2019 eine Dauerausstellung zu Alexander von Humboldt. Die Casa Museo Humboldt an einem historischen Ort der Altstadt wird damit zum weltweit ersten Alexander von Humboldt-Museum. In kubanischer-deutscher Kooperation erarbeitet, zeigt die Ausstellung Humboldt auf zwei Ebenen: im Kontext seiner Naturerforschung und dem seiner Begegnungen auf der fünfjährigen Amerikareise. Die Ausstellung richtet sich an kubanische wie internationale Besucher. Sie wirft einen hintergründigen und aktuellen Blick auf Humboldt in Amerika und versteht sich als Partner und Forum für Wissenschaft, Bildung und Kultur in Kuba.

Alexander von Humboldt und die Eiszeit

Am 20. September 2018 starb kurz nach Vollendung seines 95. Lebensjahres der Geographiehistoriker und Alexander-von-Humboldt-Forscher Prof. Dr. Hanno Beck. Beck gehörte zu der Generation von Gelehrten, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg den Forschungen zu Alexander von Humboldt in Deutschland ein neues Profil verliehen haben. Dabei ging es um eine gut dokumentierte Darstellung von Humboldts Leben und Werk; aber damit nicht genug, Beck erwarb sich auch Verdienste bei der Neuedition wichtiger Schriften des preußischen Gelehrten. Becks Lebenswerk konnte bereits 2013 in HiN anlässlich seines 90. Geburtstages gewürdigt werden. Anstelle eines Nachrufes veröffentlichen wir an dieser Stelle einen Aufsatz von 1973. In dieser durch umfangreiche Briefzitate gut dokumentierten Arbeit gibt der Autor viel von seinen persönlichen Ansichten preis. Der Ton erinnert sehr an den Vortragsstil des Bonner Forschers.

“Mason without apron” – Alexander von Humboldt and the world of freemasonry

While the lack of religion in Alexander von Humboldt’s work and the criticism he received is well known, his relationship with Freemasonry is relatively unexplored. Humboldt appears on some lists of “illustrious Masons,” and several lodges carry his name, but was he really a member? If so, when and where did he join a lodge? Are there any comments by him about Freemasonry? Who were the renowned Masons he was surrounded by? This paper examines these questions, but more importantly it analyzes what a membership might have meant for Humboldt’s scholarly work. It looks particularly at the unprecedented success he enjoyed in the United States in the early 19th century and the factors behind it. What could he have gained from these connections and how was he viewed by Masonic leaders and lodges in the trans-Atlantic world?

Address on the opening Alexander von Humboldt Season in Quito, Ecuador, on 13 February 2019

From 11 to 16 February 2019, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, together with his wife and a delegation accompanying him, travelled to Latin America. The destinations of this trip were the two South American countries Colombia and Ecuador. The journey took the Federal President to Cartagena de Indias, the Caribbean archipelago of the Islas del Rosario and finally to Bogotá. From the capital of Colombia, the group travelled to the capital of Ecuador, to the Pacific Archipelago of the Galapagos Islands, to the famous volcanic giant Antisana and finally to Guayaquil and from there back to Germany.
