Am Sonntag, dem 2. Februar 2020, findet von 11:00 bis 14:00 in den Gewächshäusern des Botanischen Gartens Berlin die Art meets Science-Matinee „Natur. Nach Humboldt“ statt. Wissenschaftler*innen und Künstler*innen präsentieren in Gesprächen, Diskussionsrunden, mit Kunst oder Musik ihre Zugänge zu der von Humboldts Naturgemälde der Tropen inspirierten 360°-Sound-Installation „You Will Go Away One Day But I Will Not“, die noch bis zum 16. Februar im Großen Tropenhaus zu erleben ist.

“Mason without apron” – Alexander von Humboldt and the world of freemasonry

While the lack of religion in Alexander von Humboldt’s work and the criticism he received is well known, his relationship with Freemasonry is relatively unexplored. Humboldt appears on some lists of “illustrious Masons,” and several lodges carry his name, but was he really a member? If so, when and where did he join a lodge? Are there any comments by him about Freemasonry? Who were the renowned Masons he was surrounded by? This paper examines these questions, but more importantly it analyzes what a membership might have meant for Humboldt’s scholarly work. It looks particularly at the unprecedented success he enjoyed in the United States in the early 19th century and the factors behind it. What could he have gained from these connections and how was he viewed by Masonic leaders and lodges in the trans-Atlantic world?

Address on the opening Alexander von Humboldt Season in Quito, Ecuador, on 13 February 2019

From 11 to 16 February 2019, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, together with his wife and a delegation accompanying him, travelled to Latin America. The destinations of this trip were the two South American countries Colombia and Ecuador. The journey took the Federal President to Cartagena de Indias, the Caribbean archipelago of the Islas del Rosario and finally to Bogotá. From the capital of Colombia, the group travelled to the capital of Ecuador, to the Pacific Archipelago of the Galapagos Islands, to the famous volcanic giant Antisana and finally to Guayaquil and from there back to Germany.
